We love Tuesdays at Literati because that’s the day we get to display our laydowns: the freshest of the fresh books come out of their boxes and into the world on our shelves. We’ve had a few days to admire the covers and leaf through their opening pages, and here are a few we are especially excited about this week:
All That Followed, by Gabriel Urza: Set in a small fortressed town in Basque Country with a mysterious past? Yes, please. Publisher’s Weekly says Urza’s work is “as subtle and enveloping as the txirimiri, a Basque word for ‘rain so fine that an umbrella is useless against it.'” Ok, sold.
Let Me Tell You, by Shirley Jackson: Shirley’s one of our grandest goth dames, and we are thrilled about this collection of early fiction, unpublished stories, and personal essays. We’re also all about embracing the everyday spooky, and Jackson’s the master of what NPR’s review of the book calls “suburbia’s endless fount of petty horrors with implicit social criticisms.”
Days of Awe, by Lauren Fox: If you’ve ever luxuriated in a pair of sweatpants that are a “blend of cotton and self-loathing,” perhaps you need this novel for its blend of humor and sorrow. Kirkus tells us, “Read it for the magnetic voice and Fox’s ever interesting perspective on work, love, friendship, and parenthood—because, really, what else is there?” Truth. The book is full of loss, but it’s no downer. Literati Co-Owner Hilary loved her advance copy of the book, and wrote in her shelftalker: “Her musings on the absurdity of adult life will make you laugh and cry, and perhaps a little of both at the same time. And you’ll enjoy it all along the way.” And what’s more, Lauren Fox reads at the store on August 12th, as part of our Fiction at Literati Reading Series!
(Sometimes we can’t help but gravitate towards the beautiful covers.)
We’ve got a ton of great books freshly released in paperback this week. Whether you’ve been waiting for that hefty hardcover to cruise into the paper-realm, or you’re game for the accelerated joy of meeting an author for the first time in budget-friendly paperback, there’s plenty new in the store this weekend.
It’s the freakin’ weekend, baby! Come see what’s new in the shop.
